Dependents' Grants Some information of various options

Dependents' grants are not usually expected to be paid back.

Parents' Learner Allowance (PLA)

This allowance can help towards course-related costs if you have a child dependent (s). It is based on your household income.

You may be eligible if you're studying full time and have a child dependent (s) who depend on you financially.

How to apply:
  1. When applying for student finance, you will need to fill in the section for applying for PLA. You can find more information on the Government's website.
  2. SFE may contact you to ask for evidence to support your application which you will need to provide. This may include the dependent child's birth certificate, a copy of the Tax Credit Award Notice or child benefit letter. For children over the age
  3. You will then receive a letter from SFE outlining how much you're able to get, including any PLA.
  4. The amount you're eligible for will be paid directly into your account in three instalments, usually alongside any student finance you get.

Childcare Grant (CCG)

If your childcare provider is registered or approved by the CQC, Ofsted, the Department of Education, or an equivalent inspection body, you could get up to 85% of your childcare costs during term time and holidays. This is dependent on your household income.

How to apply:
  1. When applying for student finance, you will need to fill in the section for applying for CCG. You can find more information on the Government's website.
  2. SFE may contact you to ask for evidence to support your application which you will need to provide. This may include the dependent child's birth certificate, a copy of the Tax Credit Award Notice or child benefit letter. For children over the age of 20, you may need to provide a letter on headed paper evidencing that they are in full time education.
  3. You will then receive a letter from SFE outlining how much you're able to get.
  4. You'll then get an email ten days later inviting you to register with the CCGPS on their website, to set up your online account.
  5. The amount you're eligible for will be paid into your account once you've started the course and your registration has been confirmed.
  6. You must apply for CCG within nine months of the start of the academic year.

Adult Dependents Grant (ADG)

If you're a full time student in receipt of Undergraduate funding and have an adult who is financially dependent on you, such as a partner, you may be eligible to apply for an ADG.

The adult cannot be an nondependent child. Similarly, if you're under 25, you will have to be married to your partner to apply for ADG if they are the dependent adult.

How to apply:
  1. When applying for student finance, you will need to fill in the section for applying for ADG. You can find more information on the Government's website.
  2. SFE may contact you to ask for evidence to support your application which you will need to provide. However, as part of the initial application process, your partner will have to provide evidence of their income.
  3. You will then receive a letter from SFE outlining how much you're entitled to.
  4. The amount you're eligible for will be paid directly into your account in three instalments, usually alongside any student finance you get.
