Ideas Forum

Welcome to the Ideas Forum! This is a place where you can submit any idea for change about your university experience or vote and comment on existing ideas.

If you can get at least 25 other students to vote for your idea, the Union officers are then able to consider it. Don't stop at 25 though - the more votes and comments an idea gets, the more power it gives us to try to action it!

Once an Idea has reached at least 25 up-votes, it will be sent to Executive Committee and/or Student Summit which are meetings where Union staff and students discuss, vote on and potentially action your idea. So don't hold back, let us know what you want us to do! (You can even post anonymously if you prefer to)

The Ideas Forum is such a direct and effective way to get your voice heard and you can use it as many times as you like during your studies - we know that your needs and wants change year on year, so use the Ideas Forum to reflect the current issues you are facing and let us know what it is you care about.

Before you post please consider the following

  • Make sure your idea clearly states what you want to change and why – things like how it would be funded, who it would apply to – give as much detail as possible. If you don’t, we may have to delete your idea or it could be rejected by students for being too vague.
  • Check to see if the idea has already been passed under the ‘ view passed ideas’ tab – we might already be working on your idea!
  • Check to see if your idea has already been posted by someone else – if so, don’t post the idea again, but vote and comment on the existing idea
  • Check to see if your idea has been rejected and why under the ‘view rejected ideas’ tab – it might mean slight changes to your post, or it might give you an insight in to how students felt about this topic.

Please Note: You will need to log in to submit a new idea, or comment on an existing idea, below.

Use of CBPMs (Cannabis based prescription medications) on site and indoors

I am prescribed cannabis based meds. My idea is the uni creates areas to use these meds in each block, they do not fall under no smoking indoor laws. I ask so people don't have to use the entrance, feeling stigmatised by people. We could use cards to enter these safe spaces, vetted by a letter/prescription. When people need their meds, it is important to have equal access rights to prescriptions, safe places would help many like me. They will need heat detectors not smoke and good ventilation

7:24pm on 13 Nov 24 My idea is that people can have this on a support plan, enabling us to use a room within the block we are situated in. Not having to go all the way to the entrance to medicate, which is reasonable and hard with onlookers commenting.. Employers have started to make this exact adjustment, as people have a legal right to be allowed to use their medications like any other prescription. I realise this is a hot topic, however it is something I wanted to post and not hide from it.

9:32am on 21 Nov 24 I have shared this idea with a friend of mine a former student who graduated with first class honours in journalism and she states that the only way she managed to complete her university studies was through the use of CBPMs, she has some amazing ideas and contacts who may be able to provide some really positive promotional outlets for this idea. For example she knows an amazing cannabis journalist and she currently writes for a company called Leafie. She is very eager to be involved with this project/idea as a former student of the University of Derby. She also suggested that introducing facilities would be very beneficial for other students with prescribed meds that are administered in unpleasant ways such as people with diabetes who need regular injections in their thigh and would need to remove clothing such as trousers to administer their injections. Those people currently use the spaces in the disabled toilets, which offer the privacy they need but are not necessarily a healthy environment for those activities. I would love it if you would reach out to me as this idea progresses.

8:21pm on 21 Nov 24 I definitely will reach out, it is very much something many could benefit from. I approached it from CBPMs however it goes for many medications. I hope that this idea takes flight so it can be discussed with the relevant people. Thank you for your lengthy reply Tracey. I really appreciate the time you put in :). Darren
