Due to covid-19 and subsequently working from home for 90% of our studying, it astonishing that there are no specific measures put in place by the library that enable students to borrow laptops. This is a major issue that has been relatively ignored and will impact all students but more importantly low-income students. We all have to (at some point) download software throughout our modules to successfully submit assessments, it makes it hard for those who cannot, and could impact their grades!

It was mentioned during the welcome back to Computer Science that there was a scheme for borrowing laptops, but this has since been removed by the university as they intend to implement another scheme instead, or so I heard. I’m currently on placement so that was news to me, but I’d find it very surprising if the university wasn’t working to improve access to hardware that you need for studying.

That is fantastic if it is true! However, many of the librarians clearly have not been informed and all students have definitely not been informed about this. It is an anxious time throughout induction especially at the moment, it would have been much more beneficial if this had been sorted out prior to induction as I am aware that some students are worrying. Also the scheme has not been identified, and we cannot just assume that it will go ahead.

This would help me a lot because I cant afford a laptop so I'll be constantly in the library

It’s such a shame there is not a laptop loaning scheme in place already! Considering we only have 3 hour slots per person per week ???????

This idea has passed. Corey, the president, has been working with the University's Academic Task Group to increase the investment in the number of laptops that are available to borrow from the library for those students in need. By using the student feedback that has been collated from here on the Ideas Forum, through to the feedback that students provide via programme representatives, the Officer Team have been sharing this with the University and this has resulted in an investment of over £350,000 in IT hardware for students in need
