Remove the need for a new piece of work when applying for an EEC

When applying for an EEC students are often given a new piece of work - this can be argued as being unfair to students who may be going through a difficult time or are unwell due to a disability. Many students start preparing for assignments ahead of time by reading and preparing. When a student needs to apply for an EEC this work can go to waste when they are given a piece of work. EEC applications and outcomes need to be individualised to the person and the scenario on a case by case basis.

10:15am on 14 Nov 20 I think it would be a good idea for this to be reconsidered by the University. Students applying for an EEC are often struggling emotionally as well as with the underlying concern. Hearing the work you have done in adversity will need to be redone is always going to be upsetting even if the new assignment is still building on the knowledge you have gained. The impact on mental health is not inconsiderable. A more flexible approach which would give the deciding academics the ability to respond to the individual need while balancing the fairness required for all (unfair advantage should also not be gained), feels like a better option. Of course this makes the decision making process more challenging, however this is what the discussion with the University should revolve around - how best to ensure fairness for all.

12:59pm on 14 Nov 20 I agree with Ian's comment above. Requesting an EEC is usually a last option for students. To change the assignment title, at a time which is possibly already stressful, could create more pressure for those who require a longer extension. Also, the change in assignment title potentially defeats the purpose of providing additional time because new research and application will then be required. I feel that students who are experiencing genuine difficulties whilst studying and require an EEC should feel supported. Sometimes, just remaining on the course whilst experiencing personal difficulties etc. is a struggle to overcome in itself, without the additional hurdle that the title change will create.

11:13am on 4 Dec 20 This 1000%! In my experience I know that applying for EECs is usually because of other stressors going on in my life. Changing the majority of an assignment just adds even more stress!
