As someone who has a nut allergy I would really appreciate Derby Uni being a nut-free environment. Due to the severity of nut allergies, schools are often nut-free places of learning and as children grow up, the university should be also! My allergy is triggered by peanuts in the air. I have missed a number of lessons now due to having a reaction from people eating peanut containing products in sessions, the library or atrium, making these areas inaccessible. I would appreciate your support.

7:04pm on 8 Nov 21 I totally support this. Nut allergies are life threatening and the university should be a safe and accessible space for all.

7:07pm on 8 Nov 21 Agreed, especially as these allergies are so common and life threatening. Someone’s education and life should not be at risk due to another’s liking for nuts.

7:20pm on 8 Nov 21 Completely behind this. No one should suffer and miss out on education because of something they can’t control!

7:29pm on 8 Nov 21 I stand by this! Peoples lives should not be put at risk because of a food item that people bring to university.

12:14am on 9 Nov 21 This is a very big area to control, I'm pretty sure the uni's catering outlets and shops have a duty of care to label allergens and you can ask your friends to not eat things with nuts in around you. Probably likewise with society and sports events. For those of us who can eat them they're a great source of protein and easy to grab a handful of nuts for a snack. You don't have the right to control a whole uni but you can ask for reasonable measures to be taken for your safety. People shouldn't be eating in uni class spaces anyway but you can ask your lecturers to help with that but common spaces are a step too far

5:11am on 17 Feb 22 As someone with allergies to both coconut and strawberry - I carry epi-pens - I cannot see anywhere banning those. Coconut oil is used in a plethora of products now. I understand your pain I just do not think it is feasible to completely ban a product.

10:23am on 19 Mar 22 Whilst I understand the reasoning behind this, I struggle to see how this would be enforced. Yes, you would remove all nut-based products from Union shops etc. but what about the issue of cross-contaminants in the preparation of the already packaged foods the Union sells in the shops? Also, what would happen regarding students bringing in external foods and snacks to eat in University?
