    Parking Problems

Last year, a permit for Markeaton Park cost £200 and students were able to park 5 days a week during teaching weeks at Markeaton Park and at KR, MS or BM on non-teaching weeks for free on this permit. This year, the permit costs £10 but, adding the daily charges, parking all day every day on teaching weeks comes to £358 and this does not allow for parking on non-teaching weeks. I would like to see this reversed or other alternatives made available as almost doubling the cost is unacceptable.

11:09am on 24 Sep 21 I second this Being at the mercy of the county council's ever-increasing prices is making it very difficult for students who commute - often expressly to try and save money - avoid attending on-campus teaching and social events

11:10am on 24 Sep 21 Something else which I was unable to fit into the character limit - the permits for Markeaton Park have already sold out, a mere 4 days after going live. There have always been a few problems in the past with a few people missing out on permits but this year it appears that there are a lot more people who have been unable to purchase a permit.

11:34am on 24 Sep 21 This parking situation sounds bonkers, what's the point of a permit if you're having to pay extra? You might as well not bother and keep your £10 to continue paying for parking. What worries me is that people will go and park elsewhere and clog up the streets around the uni further. Who actually listened to what the students wanted and needed when changing how the permit worked?

12:38pm on 24 Sep 21 *COMMUTER STUDENTS OFFICER* Hi everyone, first of all I want to say thank you for your comments on this very important issue. Please be rest assured that several people over at the Student Union are working extremely hard to come to some sort of resolution over this issue. This is important for all of us and we will keep you updated with any news. Krissy Gresty, your Commuter Students Officer

7:17pm on 24 Sep 21 Yeah! I was shocked to find all the permits for markeaton had gone a day after they went live. Also, the page said for months that the policy was being reviews and that all students would receive an email when it had been updated. I did not receive any emails and have missed out. It’s completely unreasonable and financially unrealistic to be expected to pay £5 to park everyday, and it will put students off from staying on campus to study, use the library etc because they’ll be conscious of the time and parking fee increasing. Hope something can be done so that students who are unable to get public transport and need an affordable parking option can be supported. Evan

1:35pm on 30 Sep 21 I second this. I live over an hour away and have two young children. I did manage to get a permit but having to pay out for parking on top of the cost of commuting is going to put a real strain on our already strained finances. I agree that it wasn't well communicated and that something needs to be done.

5:22pm on 30 Sep 21 I have to be on campus every week day and have to pick my son up from childcare at 5pm, this makes commuting impossible on public transport as by the time my lecture is done and I've finally gotten a bus or walked into town, the connecting bus does not get me to the childminders in time. It's going to cost me Approx £900 for the year just to park as I missed out on a markeaton park permit too. I get the high prices are a deterrent but some of us are forced to use the car and just can't afford that amount

11:21am on 4 Oct 21 maybe a sliding scale or points scale could work, factor in distance from campus and care duties and adjust the price according to need and circumstance.

7:19pm on 12 Oct 21 Just to update this item has been passed and the union will active campaign for it with the university. We will update if we hear back.
