Donate left over food from the SU shops to the homeless or food banks.

    Rejected
After discovering that on some days a significant number of sandwiches and wraps were going to waste due to there sell by dates running out, I feel a better option would be to have these donated to a willing food bank or homeless shelter. At the end of the day, many of these food items contain meat products, so have essentially died only to end up being thrown out. Even if a charity doesn't want to accept barely out of date food, it's worth investigating.

7:33pm on 31 Jan 18 Preach! The equivalent to 1.3 Million meals is thrown away per year in the UK, does Derby University really want to be an advocate to that?

9:59pm on 23 Oct 18 This! There are numerous charitable organisations within Derby constantly asking for food donations to feed the homeless, they're also seeking volunteers. It would be really beneficial to these charities if Derby university gave what would be ordinarily wasted to food banks and feed the homeless charities.

1:19pm on 16 Dec 19 Good Afternoon and thanks for submitting your idea. Whilst it may appear that the majority of our sandwiches go to waste once they have expired, this is not entirely the case. We work hard to ensure our waste is kept to a minimum, which can lead to some ranges running short towards the end of the week, however this is viewed positively in the scheme of things. Any sandwiches that are not sold are returned directly to the supplier who can ensure they are kept the the apporpriate temperature whilst they are being transported. These sandwiches are then recycled to ensure they can be re-used for other activites moving forward, such as fuels. Whilst the ideal scenario would be for the product to go to a charity of some form this is restricted by things such as temperature control and food safety, especially when brands are taken into account.
