I’m Louise, a 1st year Criminology student and I currently compete for our BUCS C team. I’m running for the post of Social Secretary for this coming academic year.
I took up riding at an early age and was an active member of the pony club, however, riding on the BUCS teams this year has enabled me to get back into the sport after having a few years out. I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the C team, as well as stepping up to ride at B team competitions when needed; both of which have really improved my confidence and riding abilities, as well as increasing my involvement within the club and knowledge of BUCS rules. I have also enjoyed aspects aside from riding for the club, like fundraising and charity work, and of course socials! Having been on the charities committee during sixth form, I feel that I have the experience to organise successful charity events and socials for the club. During this role, I worked alongside a team to plan and carry out fundraising events and manage any money that we raised.
As your social secretary, I aim to…
I.Increase inclusivity of all of our members – If elected, I would like all of our members to feel comfortable sharing ideas and feedback on socials, enabling me to plan a variety of events to suit a wider range of members, overall increasing attendance and improving relationships within the club.
II.Gain a larger presence amongst other sports societies – As a relatively new club, I feel it is essential to gain a larger presence within the university sports community. I aim to plan more joint socials with other sports societies in order to do this, giving us all the opportunity to meet new people.
III.Plan days out in advance – Uni life can be busy for us all. As social secretary, I aim to arrange events as early as possible, on a fortnightly basis, in order for you as a member to plan around them.
IV.Organise a variety of days out and socials – Joint socials, Alton towers, taster days in new disciplines such as polo, day at the Uttoxeter or Nottingham races, tour of the national stud, movie nights and more!
V.Increase member involvement in our charity fundraising – Charities make such an impact with the work that they do. This year, I’d like to continue the clubs focus on mental health charities, such as Mind, as well as increasing support for the RDA (Riding for the disabled Association). With your increased involvement in our fundraising efforts, such as RAG week, we can maximise the positive impact these charities have.
I am so proud to be involved with such a committed and welcoming club with riders from all different backgrounds, and I cannot wait to see what next year can bring for us.
Thank you, Louise.
