Harvinder Singh Saluja

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the current University students. My name is Harvinder Singh Saluja as it shows above; however, people who know me closely like to call me Harry. I am currently studying MSc in Toursim Management. I love interacting with people and positively influence wherever I find myself. My hobbies include reading and writing poetry, listening to music and travelling. I am vying for the position of President (Indian Society) and I need your support.

Additionally, during my first two months in the University I have had opportunity to meet many of the students, which has allowed me to have an insight on the diversity and makes me remember the golden rule 'Treat others how they want to be treated'. I am focussing on the changes which I could bring to the society as your next President. I have recently been elected as Students Rep for my program because of the vision I have to help my colleagues and the University.

WHY PRESIDENT (INDIAN SOCIETY)?
This position is one of the most important offices in the Union as the President ‘is primarily responsible to surge the values of Indian Culture, interests and welfare of the Indian society students’ as well as ‘ensuring that the Union is acting in a way which promotes the Indian Events rigorously’.

I humbly believe that I have the requisite skills and ability to function effectively as President (Indian Society) if elected. Furthermore, I strongly believe that the welfare of the Indian society students is key to having a wonderful experience of Indian culture whilst being away from the home country. It is therefore imperative for students to elect someone who understands their interests and who is committed to bringing the people together. I am therefore seeking your support and votes even as I offer myself to serve you in the capacity of President (Indian Society).

If elected I would aim to:

- actively seeking out new perspectives and ideas which will be embraced

- hold a new series of events aimed at getting more people involved to increase outreach and reputation

- involving students of other countries/cultures/societies in Indian events to spread our instilled values and likewise getting involved with other societies as well

- increase social activity by running monthly socials in different ways across Derby

- creating more opportunities to interact and socialize with each other

- Open MIC for poetry, stand-up comedy, etc

- recognising the faiths of our members so that we can hold events and talks about the different festivals of each religion. Such as talks about the different religious scriptures or throwing an event for Holi, Diwali, Durga Puja, Baisakhi, etc.

- Day trips and potlucks with some card games or bingo

- arranging a Bollywood night event bringing the Desi Vibes live (you can expect Dhol drummers and many more surprises)

- increase funding by seeking out new sponsorship opportunities

I think these aims will have a positive impact on the soceity members.

Overall my aim is to make Indian Society more inclusive and key part of the lives of the members’ university lives.

What will you bring to the role (e.g. experience, skills, qualities)

I have more than 13 years of experience in the tourism industry and worked as a Team Manager. I have developed exemplary communication & leadership skills, great decision making, mentorship, relationship building and also helped in arranging various events throughtout my tenure. I am a person who believes in solving problem rather then revolving around the problem itself, which makes me an adaptable person who can manage changes.

I believe these make me an ideal candidate.

Thank you for reading my manifesto and feel free to get in contact with me to ask any questions about my ideas by contacting me.
