British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS)

British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) is the national governing body for higher education sport in the UK. Its vision is to enhance the student experience in three key areas:

  • Performance
  • Competition
  • Participation

To do this, BUCS works with student athletes, Sports Union staff and elected officers as well as professional sporting staff, coaches and volunteers at its 161 member institutions. It offers a comprehensive, multi-sport competition structure and manages the development of services and facilities for participative, grass-roots sport and healthy campuses through to high-performance, elite athletes.

The BUCS sporting programme is available to the 2.3 million students across the UK. Over 100,000 students regularly compete in BUCS competitions, leagues and events. BUCS delivers 50 sports to these students and universities and organises 150 individual final or championship events each year.

The Union Sports Pass is a one-time annual fee of £20 that gives you access to participate within sports at your Union. As a Union Sports member, you receive the following benefits:

  • Access to join our Sports Clubs and access training sessions
  • You are eligible to compete in BUCS competition
  • Able to purchase tickets to the Sports Awards
  • Specific Personal Accident Insurance for student sport through Endsleigh, if you are injured as part any club activities - derbyunion.co.uk/getinvolved/memberresources
  • Access to coaching and officiating bursaries through club application to the Union.

The Union Sports Pass also helps keep our clubs affordable by helping the Union fund training and competition opportunities.

No Walkover Policy

A voluntary walkover is deemed to have occurred when it is believed that reasonable actions undertaken by the team, club or Athletic Union (or equivalent) of the offending institution/Playing Entity would have prevented the forfeit.

What is our policy?

The Union of Students has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to Walkovers by sports team within BUCS competition.

The Union is a registered charity and has a legal obligation to ensure that its funds are used in the best interests of its members.

It is not possible for the Union to cancel transport and absorb additional costs when a Walkover occurs as these are costs that have no benefit to the charity.

The Union Executive team considers this to be inappropriate use of funds and will not tolerate Walkovers from any team.

BUCS Individuals

Do you want to represent the University of Derby and showcase your skills amongst other student athletes from around the UK? Have you got what it takes to bring home a medal and precious BUCS points to help the University of Derby become a top sporting institution? If so it’s time for you to get involved in this year's BUCS programme!

Alongside running a league programme comprising of over 4,800 student teams they also hold over 100 championship events throughout the year for individual students to compete in.

Students who compete in the Individuals programme will have the opportunity to win medals and BUCS points which goes towards our University total helping us achieve our goal of cementing a top 50 place in the overall BUCS University standings.
