PAL stands for Peer Assisted Learning, it is a scheme set up by your Union of Students to guide first and foundation year students (who we describe as PAL learners) through their first year at the University. This is done by having someone who is in second year or above (who we describe as PAL leaders) that study’s within the same academic discipline run, a Microsoft teams site that is filled with content on course specific tips and advice.

These leaders also deliver in person and online sessions that are there for anyone who has any questions or topics they would like some help with. Our leaders are trained in signposting learners in the right direction so even if they are not able to answer a question they will be able to direct them towards someone who can. They are also given a member of academic staff to support them with academic content and any academic queries.

One of the main aims of PAL is to aid with the transition into higher education, something we know can be quite difficult. PAL leaders are fundamental to the schemes success as they have just gone through the experiences that current learners are going through and so no one is in a better position than them to guide learners throughout the year.
