Following the news yesterday that Her Majesty The Queen has passed away, we now enter a national period of mourning, with the funeral due to be held in the coming days. The details are yet to be announced, but this day may be a national holiday, and we will let you know of any changes to events or services that are required. We are also reviewing the University and Union activities planned through this period of mourning to determine what should and should not go ahead.

Her Majesty has given this country, and its Realms and Commonwealth, 70 years of dedication and service. This is a remarkable achievement, and her commitment and leadership are an inspiration to us all. She will be greatly missed.

Professor Kathryn Mitchell CBE, Vice Chancellor

As a mark of respect for Her Majesty, we are flying the flags at half-mast at Kedleston Road and Britannia Mill until the morning after her funeral. The lighting to the North Tower stairs at Kedleston Road has been changed to deep purple to signify this time of mourning.

A Book of Condolence will be opened at 9.00am today in the Council House in Derby. More details about this, and other ways to pay tribute to Her Majesty in the city, can be found on the city council's website. When further opportunities to share condolences across the county are announced we will share these details with you.
