The first Online Student Forum of the 24-25 academic year was hosted by the Union of Students and the University of Derby Online Learning team on Monday 4th November. There was a lot of discussion around learning and teaching and opportunities and careers and these points have been summarised below:
- A student studying the International Environmental Policy & Law module asked about other courses that would benefit their career growth. It was mentioned that free student membership with IEMA, the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment, and it is encouraged that all students utilise this as IEMA have information on professional development and they offer accredited courses which may be suitable. IEMA can be accessed via https://www.iema.net/.
- A student on the BSc Nursing top up asked about changing the form of video and power points assignment to written ones as students are facing challenges with how to go about the audio form of submission. Rachel Spink answered that for some assignments that have required a presentation with audio they had had to use Panopto which has presented a challenge due to the audio being separate from the presentation. This is being looked at going forward but students in those affected modules have the opportunity to do a written assignment or a narrated presentation.
- A student asked how to utilise the reading list recommended by each course using the UDOL library platform. It was suggested that students could utilise the Develop@Derby resource for information on these skills. Links that may be useful are below. - A question was asked about moderation and release of results which were delayed. Grades should be back before the start of the next trimester and it was recommended that if students were finding this wasn’t happening that they should contact their program leader in the first instance.
- A student asked about opportunities for online students to work in UK after completing a course at University of Derby and how to go about this. It was recommended for students to contact the university Careers Service who would be able to advise on current opportunities. Careers and employability - Study - University of Derby.
