The University of Derby Student Services are offering students a range of support services, based on their needs. However, not all students are aware what kind of support is available for them, what they consist of, or how to access support.

The Union of Students offers all students independent and confidential advice on a range of topics including academic offences, money matters, and mental health. Head to our advice webpages to find out more.

This article is going to list all the support services offered by the Student Services team, what they mean, and how to access them.

Student Wellbeing

The Student Wellbeing team is formed of friends and approachable professional advisors who, based on the needs of a student, will do the following:

  • provide bespoke and individual advice, guidance and information about Wellbeing and Support
  • signpost to relevant internal and/or external services, always ensuring that the student is getting the right support
  • ensure that the students are getting the most out of their Student Experience, ensuring improvements are continuous

This service is available to all students, potential students, staff, and visitors.

The Wellbeing Team also has a highly trained Safeguarding Team who can support a student who has more pressing concerns, ensuring that advice, support and appropriate measurements are takes to offer a safe environment for all.

The Safeguarding Team is also home to Sexual Violence and Misconduct Liaison Officers (SVMLO) who are certified to support students who have experienced recent or past experiences of sexual misconduct. The Union of Students also offers a Sexual Violence Liaison service. You can book your appointment with an SVLO through our website.

Counselling and Mental Health Service

The Counselling and Mental Health service is made of two teams:

  • The Mental Health Practitioners (MHP's) who offer immediate appointments and support:
  • The Counsellors who offer therapeutic support in a safe and supportive environment over an agreed period of time

The highly experienced practitioners and counsellors will provide support to help overcome barriers to learning, by taking into account the individual needs of a student.

Some of the issues that the practitioners work with are homesickness, loneliness, stress anxiety, depression, trauma, etc.

The Counselling and Mental Health Service is available to all University of Derby students who currently live in the UK.
