Little Shop of Horrors: Behind the Scenes

Over the past semester we have been hard at work excitedly putting together a fantastic show and we're so proud of what both the creative team and cast have accomplished in such a short time. We whole-heartedly encourage you to grab tickets whilst you can and enjoy the show.

"With everyone working together and coming up with the perfect ideas we're making this show the best we’ve ever had!" (Teigan Olivia, Director) University Of Derby's Musical Theatre society are so excited to present to you "LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS"!

Over the past semester we have been hard at work excitedly putting together a fantastic show and we're so proud of what both the creative team and cast have accomplished in such a short time. We whole-heartedly encourage you to grab tickets whilst you can and enjoy the show. Little Shop of Horrors tells the story of Seymour (Oscar Lindley), a meek florist's assistant who discovers an usual plant that he names after his crush: Audrey (Phoebe Nicholls). Seymour's life is disrupted as Audrey II (voiced by Rei Goh) grows bigger and bigger, demanding more and more...sacrifice.

From a sadistic dentist (Charlie Jennings) to romantic ballads, this comedy musical is not one you want to miss. "Everyone has been working so hard and the energy and commitment from the whole cast is amazing." (Indie MacMahon, Musical Director). Our cast dedicate 6 hours of face-time to rehearsals and practice continues at home in order to perfect choreography and harmonies. A typical Musical Theatre rehearsal begins with a vocal warmup led by the fabulous Musical Directing team - of course including a rendition of "I like the flowers" (major ear-worm). Followed by run-throughs of all established songs - occasionally alongside band leader Thomas Linford. Physical Warmup is then led by one of our talented Choreographers, who in turn take the cast through practice of all ensemble and small group numbers, encouraging and correcting as they go along.

Scene-work and character work is typically carried out on an extra 2-3 hour Monday session by the directing team, but if needed it is ran through in session and then paired with the corresponding vocal/dance numbers. The Tech team will also attend sessions and collaborate with the creative team in order to best understand the show, and ensure their plans correlate with the wider vision. The Musical Theatre rehearsal process is built on trust between all cast members, and a positive reassuring environment that encourages confidence and creativity. It's these conditions that allow true artistic exploration and makes the show a joy to both star in, and watch.

There's no society I'd rather be part of.
