Hi everyone, as some of you are aware I am the Sustainability Officer for the University of Derby and would like to say a warm welcome to returning and new students, I hope that you are all enjoying the fresher’s fair which has lots on.

For my journey so far as the Sustainability Officer, I have started to move forward with my manifesto in the following key areas.

Nature plot, Plastic and food wastage – I have contacted several higher bodies in how this can be put into place at the university, and I am awaiting further information from this. My ideas for this are to help students’ knowledge and satisfaction on this area such as how to get students involved whether that be volunteering or donating towards a range of project.

Secondly, I have joined the ‘futures steering group’ with direction from Associate Professor Chris Ribchester. This group helps students gain knowledge on sustainability by incorporating sustainability into the learning framework. I, as your Sustainability Officer will represent students. With your ideas I can help influence this framework to higher bodies within the university. I am also able to work with other highly experienced people within the university to help direct me on my manifesto.

Thirdly, I am joining Joanne Vale, Programme Coordinator, on a sustainability talk on Thursday the 22nd of September at 9.30am at B3O2 on a question and answer on sustainability at the university. Students can attend and ask me questions; give ideas and raise any concerns they may have.

Furthermore, I will be a student voice for all fair-trade products that are used and sold at the university. I think fair trade is an excellent way forward for our university’s sustainability goals, and it also shows that as a university we care about what food sources we are using.

Best wishes to all students and staff,

Nicola.
