As the first term of the academic year draws to a close, I am proud to reflect on the initiatives and achievements I have been working on. Here’s an overview of everything I have been working on so far, from creating new possibilities to promoting diversity and inclusion.
A key focus this term has been promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion across all aspects of student life. A new EDI training schedule has been introduced, offering sessions such as Look After Your Mate training, eating disorder awareness, and mental health in sport. These sessions provide essential skills and knowledge for our members, ensuring a supportive and welcoming environment for everyone. Additionally, we created a leaflet to guide students who may not be able to participate in able-bodied sports, connecting them with local opportunities. These resources are now easily accessible on the Union’s website, making it simpler than ever for students to get involved.
Another significant milestone was the review and revision of the sports Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Student feedback was important to this process, leading to important updates that ensure all students’ needs are met. The revised MOU also formalises the involvement of sports council representatives, strengthening the support structure for our student athletes.
This term I have been working closely with the Societies and SLS Coordinator to review and enhance current policies, ensuring they are inclusive and that societies receive the support they need to flourish. Our efforts have already resulted in funding allocations to over 15 societies, with another round planned for January. Moreover, we’ve approved seven new societies, including a Book Club, Creative Arts Society, and Indian Society, providing even more opportunities for students to connect and engage.
This term, we have focused on engaging students from under-represented demographics. Through the Engineer Your Game campaign, we've gone out to apprentices, particularly those in the Nuclear Skills Academy, to raise awareness about Union prospects. This initiative resulted in successful induction talks and the formation of an apprentice football team in the Friday Football League. Similarly, our Let’s Be Friends campaign aims to connect with groups like student carers, commuter students, and mature students. Events are being held each term, alongside a dedicated Teams channel, to foster a sense of community and provide tailored opportunities.
At the beginning of term, I created a Union on Tour initiative which brought mini freshers’ events to students across various sites and accommodations. Stops included Buxton & Leek Colleges, Markeaton Street, Friar Gate, and all student accommodations. These events not only introduced students to the Union but also showcased the diverse range of services and support available to them.
To strengthen the relationships between students, societies, and sports, we hosted a series of interactive events, including a society social, a sports quiz, and karaoke nights. These events provided a platform for collaboration, building trust and improving support systems within the Union.
Finally, our efforts to celebrate diversity and amplify student voices have shone brightly this term. A BAME in Sport video was launched as part of Black History Month to highlight and celebrate the diversity within our sporting community. Meanwhile, the BUCS Takeover returned for a second year, featuring engaging social media content like interviews with captains, players, and spectators, as well as action shots from matches. This initiative has received glowing feedback and will continue on a weekly basis.
It has been an amazing first term and I am excited to be back after the new year and continue my work on building and stronger and more inclusive community for students!
