As Vice President (Education), my focus is on enhancing student representation, increasing the visibility of academic support services, and amplifying the voices of our student body to ensure their needs are met.

Reflecting on my journey thus far, serving as a Student Governor and co-chairing Senior Leadership Team meetings has been both exciting and enriching. These experiences have offered me valuable insights into higher education governance. Additionally, the Advanced HE student governor training provided an invaluable opportunity to network with fellow student union representatives nationwide and to further develop my understanding of governance. This training has equipped me to ensure that student perspectives are heard and valued at the highest levels.

Strengthening Student Representation and Visibility
To amplify awareness of the Student Representative (SR) system, I led our involvement at Freshers Fair, connecting SRs and officers with new students to introduce them to the role's impact. Additionally, we launched a dedicated SR tile on the UDO platform, streamlining access to resources for both SRs and students. I am also working closely with the Interim Provost to secure college-wide support, ensuring consistent SR policy implementation that strengthens student voice across departments.

Celebrating Cultural Diversity and Inclusivity
For Black History Month in October, I organised an educational trip to the National Justice Museum in Nottingham. Students engaged in an African drumming session, broadening their understanding of African heritage through an interactive, hands-on experience.

In November, with the Chaplaincy’s support, I hosted a Diwali celebration on campus, inviting students and staff to explore the festival’s historical and spiritual significance. This celebration fostered cross-cultural understanding and unity, thanks to strong participation and backing from the Union of Students.

Embedding Sustainability in Education
As part of the Responsible Futures Steering Group, I am working to integrate sustainability into academics, equipping students to positively impact the environment through their studies.

Promoting Work Rights Awareness
To support students in the workplace, myself, along with the other officers, recently met with the Careers and Employment Services head to explore strategies for raising work rights awareness, helping students avoid exploitation and ensuring fair treatment.

I look forward to continuing this journey and remain committed to enhancing the student experience at the University of Derby.
