If you’re nervous about starting uni, just remember you’re not on your own. We want to give you some tips and tricks for navigating a booze-free Freshers Fortnight.
So you’ve got your place at Derby, but you don’t drink. What now?
It’s only a couple of weeks until Freshers and we can’t wait to meet you! If you’re nervous about starting uni, just remember you’re not on your own. We’re not going to bombard you with cliches like ‘everyone’s in the same boat’ (even though its true!), but we do want to give you some tips and tricks for navigating a booze-free Freshers Fortnight.
What if I’m the only person that’s not drinking?
You won’t be. No… really!
In fact, 26% of 16-25 year olds are completely teetotal (Drinkaware, 2019), so chances are that on a night out, you are only a few feet away from someone who is also not drinking.
Won’t socialising without booze be tricky?
It is true that many people equate uni life with drinking, but perceptions of student life are slowly changing, and social venues have followed suit. Many bars have introduced a wider range of 0% beers and ciders, and even whole mocktail (alcohol-free cocktails) menus. This means you can enjoy great drinks in town with your new mates, while steering clear of the booze.
Bunk Wings
We recommend Bunk Wings on Sadler Gate for a wide range of yummy mocktail options. Check out their drinks menu.

What non-drinking events are there during Freshers?
Our Freshers Fortnight events schedule is packed with events taking place at non-alcohol-centric venues. If you are looking to avoid the club (and drinking) scene, we will be hosting 10+ events that take place away from nightclubs. View our full event schedule online.
Similarly, if the club scene is something you still want to get involved in, we have an exciting range of themed club nights to get stuck into!
