What is a portfolio and why do I need it?

A portfolio is a collection of work that demonstrates your skills, bodies of work and interests. It is best to include a link to your portfolio in any software/video game programming job applications you do, as it allows the potential employer gage your skills quicker thus a higher chance of being offered an interview.

What do I include?

You should include:

  • Any piece of university work your are proud of (especially any graphics work from 2nd Year),
  • Any pet project you've made in your own time this can be,
    • Games,
    • Software,
    • Algorithms,
    • Mods.
  • Any academic article/personal blog about your chosen field.

It's probably best, (especially with video games) is to have a screen shot of your project coupled with a link to a public github, other git sites are available, repository for the project so potential employers can see the code first hand.

Other things you may want to add to your site can include:

  • Contact Information,
  • Your CV/Resume,
  • Any hobbies or interests you have.

Do i have to write the website myself?

Short answer no. You can use sites like Wix.com, Google Sites, webs.com or even wordpress with a plethora of other free site creators. Having a domain would also be a good idea though you will have to pay on these sites, to link the domain to the site.

For the long answer, no but if you want a web development job creating your own front and back end will be a brillant piece of portfolio work.
